One of my favorite times of the year is here- the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
Sixty-eight teams including my beloved West Virginia Mountaineers are squaring off with a national title on the line. WVU doesn’t have the talent they had two years ago when they made a run to the Final Four but they do have talent.
Kevin Jones is as good as any power forward in the land. He is an offensive rebounding machine. Truck Bryant, the teams only senior besides Jones, will take this team far if he plays smart and hits the open shots.
Denis Kilicli, a mountain of a Turk, is a force on the block with a sweeping hook and a power game. Even with the injury to two front line players Kilicli and Jones should make their presence known with Dominic Rutledge spelling them with energy and athleticism.
Then there are the freshmen.
In the backcourt Gary Browne and Jaborie Hinds handle the ball the bulk of the time. Defensive specialist, Keaton Miles, starts at small forward and Aaron Brown gets playing time but after that it’s rare to see another face on the court.
I truly believe these eight players have enough talent to take West Virginia deep into the tournament. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made the Elite Eight. Unfortunately I also wouldn’t be surprised if they lose to Gonzaga in their first game. It’s been that kind of season.
19-13 with ten of those loses by a total of twenty-nine points. Lead after lead blown by player after player.
It was frustrating to be a Mountaineer fan this year but all that can be forgotten with three wins. It’s that simple. Three measly wins.
Wouldn’t that be a great way for Kevin Jones to finish his career?
Only time will tell but till then.
